Trained elephants and sea lions give amazing performances. But the Zoo in Basel became famous on account of its gorillas and rhinoceroses and its many successes in animal breeding.
The animals are housed with understanding and respect, and live in societies appropriate to the habitats of their species.
In the year 2001 the new theme building was inaugurated. The Etoscha-House explains the community life and interaction of diverse animals in the African Savanna. The cycle of growing, eating and degeneration is explained in detail. The Etoscha House iitself is integrated in this cycle of life.
