Il Museo di Hermann Hesse
The Herman Hess Museum, Lugano, Switzerland

This intriguing museum, devoted to the works of writer and painter Hermann Hesse, is housed within the walls of the Tower in Casa Camuzzi, which is part of the Camuzzi House Complex in Montagnola where Hesse once resided. The collections feature examples of poetry and paintings. A biographical documentary is presented in the theater room.

Painting, sculpture, and photography by such notables as Klee, Hodler, Renoir, Degas, and Turner are part of the museum's permanent collection. This museum of Extra-European Cultures features displays of objects and artifacts from non-western cultures like Oceania, Indonesia, and Africa. A center for ethnographic studies and a library are also housed in the museum.


Villa Favorita
Fondazione Thyssen-Bornemisza, Castagnola, Switzerland

This impressive private art collection, which consists of more than 150 contemporary American and European masters, is housed in a 16th century mansion. The works encompass all the important movements from the era and include such artists as Winslow Homer, Giorgio de Chiruco, Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollock, and Andrew Wyeth. The mansion gardens feature native and exotic species.
