Simplon: Stockalper Hospice
The first hospice on the Simplon, begun by the the knights of St John, was first mentioned in 1235. When they left, it quickly went to ruin.
Jodok Stockalper completely rebuilt and enlarged it in 1666. Following his death the hospice went into decline as his heirs did nothing to save it. It was once again restored in 1968.
The narrow stone building with a square floor plan has one small church tower. The first two floors were at the disposal of travellers, while four other floors were used as a summer residence. A chapel with a small choir occupies the top floor.
